Grandin Court Elementary has a Birthday Book Celebration for those who want to participate. Mom contributed money, let Mrs. Lawson (the librarian) know what subjects I like to read, and Mrs. Lawson had a party for a few of us that had birthdays in December. My name is put in a plate in the front of a Pete the Cat and Lego book at the Grandin Court Elementary library. It was a nice break from the classroom. Who doesn't love popcorn and cupcakes mid-morning in the school library with Mom?
This winter my upper lip was consistently cold, so I grew my first moustache.
On an unseasonably warm winter day, we enjoyed a walk through Fishburn Park.
About a week later on February 12, we were celebrating the first few inches of what ended up being 22" of snow. While the roads were impassable for a few days, we made a snow tunnel, slid down the hill in our plastic sleds, shoveled neighbor's sidewalks, and had a long overdue dinner with a neighbor.
I participated in Odyssey of the Mind (OM) at school this year. We were on the grades K through 2 team that was charged with recreating the world's first art festival. We had to present our creations at Franklin County High School on March 1. I'm in the background holding up one of the audience members we created. Dinosaurs, cavemen, and a tiger were all in attendance and seemed to enjoy our singing and music from our handmade instruments.
After the OM, we headed to Durham and Raleigh, NC to see Aunt Shelley and to go the Lego KidsFest with Paul's sister's family on March 2. Peter and I took a break with this Lego man. I wonder if the Lego man knows he has a chicken on his head?
I built a few Lego Heroes at the Hero Factory build area.
Peter diligently built a HUGE tower for most of the time we were there. Before we destroyed it, we laid it on its side and Paul snapped some pictures of us (from left to right: Thacker, Sarah, Peter) peering through the other end.
The syrup from our last trip to Highland County was long gone. When the Maple Festival was held this year on March 8th, we were there! We headed straight for Puffenbargers Sugar Shack, waited in line for over an hour for fresh maple glazed doughnuts, and loaded up on maple syrup. No trip to Highland County is complete without a ATV trip up to Maple Knob. Above, the men pose our "manly" pose on top of Maple Knob.
Paul, Mom and I pose for a classic family picture.
On the way back from the Maple Highland Festival, we made a couple of stops. We hit Staunton just in time for lunch at Cranberry's and some play time at Gypsy Hill Park. Who doesn't love a good tire swing with a new found friend?
Winding over Shenandoah Mountain, we also stopped at the Confederate Breastworks interpretative trail. Paul, Mom and I crawled down into the trenches and re-enacted the battle with our long-range and short-range rifles. I continued to practice my aim once we got home.
Mom sings, "You are my sunshine" to me every night. She calls this picture, "My sunshine." I've continued to lose teeth and look forward to some of my front ones growing in so I can bite into a pizza slice again.
On March 27th, my kindergarten class went to the Science Museum of Western Virginia. Our first stop was in the classroom where we learned about our five senses. We just turned the lights on and I'm peering at my pupil to see it shrinking.
I'm in the orange shirt at the top of the stairs - the stairs of famous scientists that I'm sure I'll be learning more about in my forthcoming years of school.
We learned about aquatic animals at the Living River and Touch Tank.
We hope you enjoyed learning about our January through March adventures. Next up, "Flashback: April 2014!"
